Experts Say...

Public information officer for the Worcester County Health Department, Travis Brown, warned that fentanyl puts people at high risk for overdosing due to the potency of the drug. Fentanyl is also often mixed with other drugs and the people taking the drugs don't know what is in them.

Jackie Ball, vice president of Worcester County Warriors Against Opioid Addiction, mentions that one of the biggest obstacles in fighting the opioid epidemic is stigma, since it prevents victims from seeking help. Although the public seemed to place blame and shame on drug users when the epidemic first began, people are now becoming more compassionate for substance abuse victims, Ball and Brown both agreed.

Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Ocean City, MD, and Worcester County

According to Brown, "[The health department] runs several prevention and opioid awareness campaigns every year. We promote knowledge about the State of Maryland's Good Samaritan Law, dealing with Addiction in the Workplace, the importance of Naloxone/Narcan and the dangers of substance abuse. The Prevention unit uses public service announcements, local television, print and radio, as well as social media to broadcast these messages. We also distribute medication lockboxes to local pharmacies, healthcare providers and residents."
