Mission Viejo, California: Drug abuse trends

California has the highest number of drug overdoses in the country, and Orange County follows a similar trend. Since 2020, the county has almost reached one million drug overdose cases. Out of all these cases, opioids were present in 74.8 percent of overdoses. Additionally, drug and alcohol use in Orange County has led to higher hospitalization rates than 75 percent of other California counties.

The most commonly used drugs in Orange County are marijuana and cocaine. Although marijuana has the highest rate of use for any drug in the county, prescription drugs are to blame for the highest rate of drug-related deaths in the area, followed by opioids, synthetic opioids, and heroin.

Police filed charges for one of the biggest Orange County drug busts

Authorities filed felony charges against two drug dealers in Orange County who had enough fentanyl in their minivan to kill 4.7 million people. Police found and seized over twenty pounds of this potent opioid, of which even a dose of two milligrams can be fatal. In the last sixteen years, this has been one of the biggest drug busts in the county. In addition to fentanyl, the police found almost 190 pounds of cocaine and 821 pounds of methamphetamine.
