In recent years, Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee has passed legislation to help form the Harm Reduction Center Pilot Program. Under this new legislation, harm reduction centers are now in development across Rhode Island as a means to reduce the climbing numbers of drug overdoses amongst residents, as well as to combat the negative health effects associated with substance abuse.
According to program details, each harm reduction center will operate under the supervision of a medical director alongside the support of nurses, medical health professionals, and recovery support specialists. To help achieve harm reduction goals, these various centers will provide harm reduction training and the distribution of fentanyl testing strips, emergency naloxone administrations, and referrals to outside recovery and treatment counseling for residents in need.

Back in August 2019, a Middletown man was arrested after law enforcement pulled him over for a traffic violation and smelled marijuana inside his vehicle. According to reports, the Rhode Island man was already under investigation due to a suspicion that he was operating an illegal large-scale marijuana growing and distribution ring in the Middletown area.
Information regarding this potential large-scale growing operation came after the suspect met with a police informant and agreed to deliver five ounces of marijuana to a nearby Newport location. Following the traffic stop, Newport County law enforcement went on to serve a search warrant at the driver's home, which resulted in the discovery of 53 pounds of harvested marijuana, a variety of hash and THC oil products, and over $46,000 in cash as well as the suspect's arrest.
