Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in McMurray, PA

Due to the increase in drug overdose deaths in McMurray, PA and Washington County, the state of Pennsylvania has loosened its regulations, allowing treatment and prevention for opioid use disorder among its residents. In 2020, the Secretary of Health, Dr. Rachel Levine, signed a standing order that allows Washington County-based organizations to dispense naloxone via mail. In addition, state officials began a prescription drug monitoring program to reduce the number of prescribed opioids. As of August of 2020, there was a 34 percent decline in opioid prescriptions written.

Drug take-back programs are also available in McMurray, PA and Washington County. Residents can safely dispose of unused, unwanted medications to prevent pill abuse and theft. The drug take-back program is free to the public and anonymous.

Governor Tim Wolfe spoke about the declaration to loosen regulations to prevent opioid use disorder. He said, "The work that is enabled by this declaration is vital to saving the lives of so many Pennsylvanians, providing education and treatment, and advancing initiatives across the state to continue to battle this epidemic."
