In Joliet in May of 2022, a years-long narcotics investigation led to the arrests of one woman and two men. Joliet Police seized over 1,500 grams of cocaine and $160,000 in cash during the investigation. One 32-year-old man was taken into custody from his Rockdale home and charged with the unlawful possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, and unlawful calculated criminal drug conspiracy. A 41-year-old Joliet man was arrested in his home on Kenmore Avenue and charged with the unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, false/secret compartment in a motor vehicle, and unlawful calculated criminal drug conspiracy. The 52-year-old Homer Glen woman was also taken into custody from her home and charged with money laundering. Joliet Police Chief William Evans gave a statement saying, "Due to the strong collaborative effort between the Joliet Police Department and our federal law enforcement partners, our streets are safer from the scourge of narcotics. I applaud the tireless work of these men and women."

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Joliet, IL

Since 2012, Joliet and Illinois residents no longer have to fear criminal penalties for seeking emergency help for drug overdoses, according to Public Act 097-0678. The law offers limited immunity to people seeking medical assistance, including overdose victims, and those seeking help will not face felony drug possession charges. Immunity to drug charges includes up to three grams of heroin or cocaine, up to six grams of LSD or PCP, and only if the police did not already have reasonable suspicion or probable cause for a search or arrest.
