In March 2021, a Eureka man was arrested on numerous charges for his role in a Fentanyl pill-trafficking operation. According to the Humboldt County Drug Task Force, the investigation began when the illegal circulation of counterfeit Percocet pills labeled "perc30" were attributed to a potential overdose death within the area. Around this same time, a 13-year-old was also reported to have taken the pills, for which emergency personnel had to use Narcan to revive them.
The investigation led to Eureka, CA resident Anthony Dion Medina, who was reportedly picking up hefty amounts of pills from the San Jose area and selling them throughout Humboldt County. Law enforcement then set up a surveillance operation where agents stopped Medina on a returning trip from San Jose.
Alongside a passenger and infant, law enforcement discovered 5,002 "perc30" Fentanyl pills inside his vehicle. Eight grams of cocaine and multiple firearms were later discovered at his Eureka residence. Medina was charged with possession and transportation of controlled substances for sale as well as child endangerment.
