In a recent statement, Sheriff Gregory Tony noted that Broward County is the statewide epicenter of the fentanyl epidemic and discussed the efforts the county is taking to address the problem. According to the statement, the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) and community partners are taking a three-pronged approach that includes a combination of enforcement, intervention, and education.
Over the past few years, the BSO has arrested about 200 members of the Alwoods Gang, a violent criminal street gang based in Deerfield Beach. During the most recent round of arrests, more than 20 kilos of heroin and fentanyl were seized.
The BSO also provides its deputies with the anti-opioid overdose drug, Narcan. In addition, they also conduct community education programs and advise the public about the dangers of fentanyl.
