Decatur, Illinois: Drug abuse trends

In 2020, Illinois saw a 32.7 percent increase in fatal opioid overdoses. From 2019 to 2020, fatal opioid overdoses increased from 2,218 to 2,944. This means that, on average, eight people from Illinois die daily due to overdoses. Although the number of overdose deaths has been steadily increasing since 2013, the state experienced a peak in 2020, which is considered the largest yearly increase ever seen.

Overdoses in Illinois have become more common than deaths resulting from motor vehicle accidents or homicides. In Decatur, the Ambulance Authority warns residence of the risks. They noted that drug dealers often cut heroin and Xanax pills with fentanyl, making them even more potent and dangerous.

Decatur police arrested an alleged drug dealer

In February 2022, Decatur police suspected a 66-year-old man of dealing drugs and searched his home. The search led to the discovery of 19 packages of crack cocaine on the porch and 18 more inside the house. According to the police, the drug appeared to be packaged for further distribution. The man pleaded not guilty. He is currently awaiting further court proceedings.
