Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Brenham DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

DNA Testing Reunites Woman Born in Brenham with Lost Sibling

Christina Sadberry was secretly adopted after she was born in Brenham, Texas, and was raised in Austin. Having never met a blood relative, she was thrilled to learn that she had a biological brother who lived in nearby Fort Worth.

In March 2022, Sadberry received a call from a woman named Maria Turner, who told her that a DNA kit she had bought for her husband indicated a close-familiar match. It turned out that the woman's husband, Raymond Tuner, was Sadberry's biological brother.

The two reunited a short time later, and they spent the next four months meeting on weekends, sharing stories, and making up for lost time. "Nobody can put into words how excited everybody is," said Sadberry, explaining that despite a recent move to Florida, she now has a family that no distance can take away from her.

Presumption of Paternity in Brenham Texas

In 2001, Texas adopted the Uniform Parentage Act, which provides the legal code for establishing parent-child relationships. According to experts at the Law Offices of Robbie Gail Charette, a Brenham-based legal firm, when a man is married to a woman who has given birth, generally, his paternity is not questioned.

The Uniform Parentage Act specifically states that a man is presumed to be a child's father if:

He is married to a mother when her child is born.

He and the mother were married within 301 days prior to the child's birth, even if the marriage was later declared invalid.

He marries the mother after the child's birth, and he files an assertion of paternity with the Office of Vital Statistics, is voluntarily added to the child's birth certificate, or has promised on record to support the child as his own.

He raises the child in his household during the first two years of his or her life and holds the child out as his own.

How to Establish Parentage in Brenham, TX

When a presumption of paternity does not apply, steps must be taken to establish a child's legal paternity. According to attorneys at the firm of Anne E. Kennedy Attorney at Law, which serves clients in Brenham and the surrounding area, this can be done in two ways. First, both parents can sign and file a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity, which gives the man legal parentage. If this is not possible, the mother, alleged father, or child can file a Petition to Adjudicate Parentage with the court system. This typically requires a DNA paternity test. If the test indicates biological paternity, the courts will establish legal paternity.
