Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.
Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.
Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Houston DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Longtime Houston Friends Learn They Are Brothers through DNA Testing
Houston native Walter Gordy got the surprise of a lifetime when an old friend reached out with some incredible news. Gordy had gotten sick with lymphoma in his late 30s when he decided to take a DNA test to learn more about his background and medical history. Almost five years later in 2019, his dear friend Mark Tolson took a DNA test after the birth of his son and matched with Gordy as a half-brother in the family link database. Both Tolson and Gordy were conceived by artificial insemination, apparently by the same sperm donor.
Tolson and Gordy knew each other for 12 years when they learned they were actually related. Even more, both of their mothers had also been friends for 13 years. Gordy was raised as a single child, but always wished he had siblings. Today, because of DNA testing, he is thrilled to say he's got one.
Houston Residents Speak About DNA Testing
Houston, TX is a tricky city when it comes to DNA testing, as Texas as a state is rooted in traditional religious values. The "man and wife" family dynamic is still present in Texas culture, just like in many other southern states. However, Houston is a rapidly growing, big city which often throws tradition to the wind.
Through a DNA study done by Health Street in Texas, it was found that about one in three people have had a DNA test done, with more than fifty percent of those DNA tests being paternity testing. It was also found by Health Street that almost thirty percent of those that had a DNA test done waited ten to nineteen years before going forward with the test.
Trying to Obtain Custody in Houston?
Custody battles can be tricky in Houston, because much like New York City and Los Angeles, the judge takes significant discretion when creating custody orders. Texas has a law that dictates that the child has the right to have adequate visitation with both parents. A judge must take into review a plethora of factors, such as any special needs that the child has, how active the parents were in the child's extracurricular activities prior to the custody battle, the parent's stability, when determining for certain who will become the primary caregiver.
Paternity DNA Test Proves Beyonce Has Another Half-Sister in Houston
A paternity suit was filed in the Houston court against Beyonce's father, Mathew Knowles, in 2014. Knowles had had an affair with Taquoya Branscomb back in 2010, and had fathered a daughter with her, Koi Branscomb. The court documents included the positive DNA test results that proved that Beyonce's father was also Koi's father. As a result of the suit, Knowles was required to pay child support for his daughter.
The elder Knowles has not publicly acknowledged Koi, and her relationship with Beyonce, her biological half-sister, is unknown.
