Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Spring DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Spring TX DNA Testing

Spring Woman Reunites with Biological Mother

When she was just seven months old, Katherine Beal-Roblin was given up for adoption. She lived a happy life in a loving home. However, after both of her adoptive parents passed away, this Spring, Texas resident decided to take a DNA test in the hopes of finding some biological family members. The test results led her to a first cousin who eventually arranged a meeting with her biological mother. After much planning, the two enjoyed a joyous and tearful reunion. They now speak a few times a week and Katherine has also become friends with her half-sister, Paula.

Establishing Paternity in Texas

In the state of Texas, when a child is born to unmarried parents, the child’s biological father doesn’t have any rights until paternity has been established. According to the Texas Attorney General, one way to do this is for both parents to sign and file an Acknowledgement of Paternity Form. When this isn’t an option, the courts may order a paternity test to determine the identity of the child’s biological father. If the DNA test proves a man is a child’s biological father, the courts can issue a paternity order. Once this is in place, they can also rule on other important topics including child support, visitation, and custody.

Presumption of Paternity

There are some circumstances when a man is presumed to be a child’s legal father. According to Spring paternity attorney Bryan Fagen, this includes the man being married to the child’s mother when the child is born or within 300 days prior. Presumption of Paternity may also apply if a man lives with a child during the first two years of his or her life and tells others it is his, or he marries or offers to marry the child’s mother after birth and 1) he is listed on the child’s birth certificate, 2) he agrees on record to financially support the child, or 3) he files a paternity record with the Bureau of Vital Statistics.
