Bloomington, Indiana: Drug abuse trends

Bloomington falls under Monroe County, which saw an increase of more than double for overdose fatalities from 2019 to 2020. Accidental drug overdoses caused at least 49 deaths in Monroe County in 2020. Experts believe drug overdose deaths have been elevated due to multiple factors—including the pandemic, increased availability of synthetic opioids and stimulants, and a growing presence of fentanyl on the streets.

Locals have action plans in place to try to reduce the negative impacts of drug abuse. For example, the Indiana Recovery Alliance, based in Bloomington, distributes naloxone—a drug that can reverse opioid overdose effects. During just one month in 2021, they distributed 100,000 doses of naloxone and reported over five thousand opioid overdose reversals. This action plan educates the public about the benefits of naloxone and increases the availability of the life-saving drug. As a result, 98 percent of successful opioid reversals using naloxone in Bloomington were performed by family or laypersons rather than medical professionals.
