Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Belle Glade, FL and Palm Beach County

Palm Beach County's addiction treatment program has reduced the number of overdoses throughout the county, including Belle Glade. The county dedicates about $1 million every year to this addiction treatment program so that all residents can access care, even if they can't afford to pay.

In addition to these efforts, the Palm Beach County Medical Society (PBCMS) works to educate patients and physicians about the worsening opioid epidemic. PBCMS provides opioid addiction resources to Belle Glade and county residents. Resources include an opioid addiction treatment guide and other educational information about opioids.

Experts Say...

In September 2022, Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay spoke about the county's opioid epidemic and the addiction treatment program. "We probably had the highest number of overdoses in the state, certainly one of the highest in the nation," she said. "It was crushing our community. I think we had somebody overdosing every 11 minutes in our county. We were losing on average more than two people a day." McKinlay said that they've created the program so anyone can walk in, and the triage program determines whether a patient needs inpatient, outpatient, or home care. She also added that parents or loved ones of someone with an addiction can call and receive guidance for finding help.
