Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Beckley
In January of 2020, four people in Beckley, WV were arrested with drug charges. After investigating the house for about two months, police were able to obtain a search warrant which led them to find 58 grams of heroin. Marijuana, chloroform, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and thousands in cash were also seized by police.
In February of 2020, five search warrants were carried out in Beckley, which resulted in eleven arrests. Heroin and meth were seized by the officers, as well as cash. Beckley police chief, Lonnie Christian, stated to a local news station, “We’re not looking for those low-level dealers. We’re not looking for the users. We are looking for the people who are bringing major product into the state that’s making major chaos and a lot of problems within our state and with our residents.”
In August of 2020, 17 drug traffickers in West Virginia were taken down in what is known as “Operation Shutdown Corner.” These drug traffickers were planning to distribute drugs throughout southern West Virginia. One of these men, a 31-year-old Beckley resident, was sentenced to 87 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for planning to distribute a quantity of methamphetamine. This Beckley man was participating in a drug trafficking organization that was running between California and Raleigh County, WV.
