In 2015, emergency medical services in Abington, PA and Montgomery County began administering naloxone to overdose victims. Naloxone, also known by its brand name Narcan, is a drug that reverses the effects of opioid-related overdoses. It’s often administered as a nasal spray. Narcan kits are available to first responders, firefighters, and law enforcement.

A standing order for naloxone was issued by the medical director to Montgomery County in 2015. Residents that are at risk for opioid or heroin overdoses, or anyone that might observe an overdose, can obtain naloxone at participating pharmacies in the county.

Montgomery County also offers a prescription drug disposal program allowing residents to safely dispose of unused medications.

Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Abington, PA

In 2020, a drug-related death of a man from Abington, PA led to the arrest of a drug trafficker. The Abington man had purchased drugs from Edwin V. Rodriguez that led to his death. Rodriguez faced charges of possession with intent to deliver heroin, cocaine, fentanyl, marijuana, and methamphetamine, the possession of drug paraphernalia, and the criminal use of a communication facility.
