After receiving a grant from William Paterson University in 2018, local stakeholders in Wayne and the surrounding Passaic County developed the United For Prevention Coalition. To prevent drug and alcohol abuse among Passaic County adolescents, the Coalition now provides local communities with drug prevention campaigns, support services, and training opportunities.
For example, the Coalition offers Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment Program (SBIRT) training to local health professionals to provide the resources they need to conduct early interventions and direct those at risk of substance abuse to the right treatment services. The group also provides school athletic departments with Tackling Opioids through Prevention for Athletes (TOP) program training, which educates student-athletes about the risks of prescription opioid use.

In June 2023, the Wayne Police Department arrested three people following a drug investigation that resulted in one of the suspects intentionally ramming a Wayne Police vehicle. According to reports, the Wayne Special Operations/Narcotics Unit set up a surveillance operation at a local residence, where a detective witnessed one of the suspects conduct hand-to-hand drug transactions.
When an officer went to confront the drug dealer, the dealer reversed his vehicle and rammed into the officer's police cruiser in an attempt to flee the area. Wayne Police were able to quickly apprehend the driver and two additional suspects, where they discovered crack cocaine, heroin, and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. The driver was charged with drug possession as well as fourth-degree aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
