Ventura CA DNA Testing Locations

Types of DNA Tests at our Ventura, California locations:

The most commonly ordered DNA test is a Paternity Test to conclusively establish whether or not a man is the biological father of a child.

Paternity Testing can be performed at our testing centers. DNA Testing can be done for other close family relationships, such as:

Grandparent DNA Test (if the father is not available for testing)

Avuncular DNA Test (aunt/uncle and niece/nephew)

Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Ventura DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Ventura, California - DNA Testing

Establishing paternity in Ventura, CA

Establishing paternity in California means signing a Voluntary Declaration of Parentage (VDP) or getting a court order that legally establishes a man as the father. Married parents do not need to establish paternity. However, if the parents were unmarried when the baby was born, it is usually necessary to establish paternity. Signing the VDP at the hospital after the child is born is the fastest and easiest way of establishing paternity in Ventura, but it is important that parents do not sign a VDP if there is any uncertainty about who the biological father is.

Parents who have disagreements about paternity may have to go to court. The judge will likely ask the alleged father and the child to take a DNA test so they can prove the child-father relationship. The judge can establish paternity if the results say the man is the father. Once paternity is established, parents can also determine custody, visitation, and child support.

Ventura, California: Disputing Paternity

In California, both parents can dispute paternity. Sometimes, it is enough to take a DNA test that proves a man is not the biological father. However, paternity cases can become very complex and require a family lawyer's help. Depending on the specific circumstances of each case, the judge can determine paternity based on factors other than the DNA test results.

If the local child support agency summoned you, you usually have thirty days to undergo a DNA test to prove you are not the biological father. If you miss the deadline, you may be officially established as the father, even if the DNA test says otherwise. If you signed the Voluntary Declaration of Parentage and wish to dispute it, you have sixty days from signing it. If more than sixty days have passed, you must go to court.

If you want to dispute parentage in a same-sex relationship, you must file a response and demonstrate that you did not intend to be the child's parent. Sometimes, if you already signed the Petition to Establish Parental Relationship, it may be impossible to dispute it.
