Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.
Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.
Legal DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Simi Valley DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Local DNA Data
Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Simi Valley
California has a variety of formal parentage or paternity processes. If a child’s parents are married or in a registered domestic partnership at the time a child is born, they are legally presumed to be the child’s parent. A man can be presumed to be the father in California if he has married the mother after the child is born. He can also be presumed to be the father if he has “welcomed the child into his home and openly acted as if it is his own.” This process is called “parentage by estoppel.”
Fathers in California have the right to request DNA (genetic) testing if they do not believe they are the biological father of a child. The Department of Human Services in Ventura County will offer free genetic testing if a child is receiving services through the agency. The local office of Children and Family Services is on Madera Road in Simi Valley. The California Courts also advise, “the law may declare someone the legal father, even if the genetic tests say that he is not the biological father.”
Local DNA Stories
Simi Valley residents learned of a new twist on paternity cases in May 2020 when three mountain lion cubs were discovered in nearby Santa Monica Mountains. Wildlife researchers ordered paternity tests to discover whether the cubs’ father was a male mountain lion brought into the area to increase genetic diversity among Ventura County’s mountain lions.
Biologist Jeff Sikich told USA Today that inbreeding was a problem for mountain lions in the Santa Monica mountains south of the 101 Freeway, which cuts the population off from larger wilderness areas. When the cubs were found Sikich said, “We’re hoping this circumstance is totally different, but only genetic testing will tell us for sure.”
Experts Say …
According to Ronald K. Stitch, a family law and divorce attorney in Simi Valley, “in cases where the paternity of the child is disputed, you may need to get the court to order a paternity test.” Paternity is important to protect the rights of the mother, father, and child, advises Mr. Stitch.
