Notable News Events in Trenton, NJ

In August 2022, the United States Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey announced the arrest of 13 individuals in the Trenton area following an ongoing narcotics trafficking and firearms investigation. The investigation targeted a northeast neighborhood located in Trenton notoriously known for unlawful drug-related activities.

Beginning in July 2020, undercover agents conducted numerous heroin and cocaine purchases and seizures from the varying defendants in the Garfield, Logan, and Cleveland Avenue areas in Trenton. Law enforcement ultimately identified the head dealer and base area of trafficking operations, which led to multiple arrests. Charges range from drug distribution to firearm and ammunition possession, which carry maximum penalties of 40 years in prison and up to a $5 million fine.

Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse Concerns in Trenton, NJ

In recent years, the Trenton Health Team and Mercer County Department of Human Services partnered to develop the Mercer County Overdose Fatality Review Team (OFRT). This new strategy works alongside local health and law enforcement officials to better prevent drug-related overdose deaths that have been spiking across the Trenton community.

The initiative is currently working to identify patterns of drug overdoses in the Trenton area as well as pinpoint gaps in the current system of local drug treatment care. With this program data, the initiative plans to promote beneficial partnerships and funding opportunities that can continue to introduce policy change ideas and intervention efforts, such as early detection screenings.
