Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Thorofare, NJ

Back in 2020, Gloucester County area towns, including Thorofare, partnered with the county's prosecutor's office to launch two programs that provide assistance to residents struggling with drug addiction. These programs come as part of the state-wide Operation Helping Hand Initiative, which has implemented various strategies to combat opioid addiction.

The first program is Road to Recovery, which offers alternative options to jail for local residents who have been charged with non-violent criminal offenses, including drug offenses. If an individual pleads guilty in court, the program requests that the Gloucester County resident is placed in a drug treatment program rather than jail to reduce recidivism and general local substance abuse rates.

The second program Gloucester County announced is the Straight to Treatment Program, which enables residents to walk into local participating police departments and request substance abuse treatment assistance. Those seeking help will be asked to complete an application and will be sent immediately to a drug treatment program as long as no legal barriers exist.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Thorofare, NJ

In July 2021, New Jersey State Governor Phil Murphy signed a legislative package that expanded the ongoing efforts to curb the effects of the state's ongoing opioid epidemic. The focus of these various regulations includes enhanced data collection and multiple overdose prevention tactics.

According to the new legislative package, opioid overdose antidotes such as Naloxone must be made accessible to any individual or local entity in the state of New Jersey. Previously, only medical personnel were able to access the emergency treatment drug in the event of an overdose. To enhance substance abuse data collection, the legislation also created new student health surveys to understand rates of adolescent drug abuse in local schools.
