Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our The Woodlands DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

The Woodlands, Texas - DNA Testing

How to Establish Paternity in The Woodlands, TX

In the state of Texas, two unmarried parents located in The Woodlands area will be required to formally establish paternity after the birth of their child to legally designate the child's biological father. Taking the steps to establish paternity provides the father with parental rights over his child and allows for his name to be placed on the child's birth certificate.

To establish paternity, The Woodlands parents must complete an Acknowledgment of Paternity (AOP). This completely voluntary method of paternity establishment can be completed following the child's birth at the hospital or birthing facility, or at a later date through an AOP-certified entity. It's advised to use DNA paternity testing in the event of paternity uncertainty to avoid any legal complications down the line.

Paternity Laws and Regulations in The Woodlands, TX

Under prior Texas paternity law, men from The Woodlands area who were previously presumed to be the biological father of a child would face heavy difficulties in court when petitioning to revoke child support orders if they later learned they were not the biological father. Fortunately, updates to Texas paternity law now better protect previously presumed fathers who may fall victim to paternity fraud.

In cases of mistaken paternity, individuals can now file a petition in court to terminate parent-child relationships involving a man and child who are not biologically related. The courts will ask that DNA testing is completed to confirm this claim. Any child support obligations will be terminated if mistaken paternity or paternity fraud is discovered by the results of DNA testing.

Experts in The Woodlands, TX Say…

Using DNA paternity testing to accurately identify yourself as a child's biological father is extremely important as it helps streamline the paternity establishment process. However, many fathers may question their legal rights if paternity has never been established and their name is not on the child's birth certificate. According to The Woodlands family law attorney Bryan Fagan, without a paternity acknowledgment, a presumed father will have no legal rights to his child and will not be able to seek custody or visitation until paternity is properly established.
