Sandy Springs, GA: Drug abuse trends

Sandy Springs falls under Fulton County, which in 2020 reported 120 opioid overdose fatalities. More than 90 of these opioid overdoses involved fentanyl. Fentanyl has become a significant threat in the area due to its high potency and easy availability. Other drugs are often spiked with this opioid, and even small doses of only two milligrams can be fatal. Often, people are unaware that the drugs they are using have been laced with fentanyl, leading to opioid overdoses and even death. Fulton County experienced double the number of fentanyl-related overdoses in 2020 compared to 2018. In 2020, 67 percent of overdose-related emergency department visits in Fulton County were because of opiates.

Fulton County and the state of Georgia have a Good Samaritan Overdose law, under which people can call for emergency services for drug overdoses without the fear of prosecution.

Sandy Springs heroin supplier pleads guilty in drug trafficking case

One of the leading suppliers of a heroin distribution ring operating in Georgia pleaded guilty to his crime in federal court. He admitted to funneling up to 30,000 doses of heroin into the region in three months. The man now faces a maximum of 20 years in prison, followed by a minimum of three years of supervised release and a one million dollar fine.
