DNA Test – Richmond, California

Types of DNA Tests at our Richmond, California locations:
The most commonly ordered DNA test is a Paternity Test to conclusively establish whether or not a man is the biological father of a child.
Paternity Testing can be performed at our testing centers. DNA Testing can be done for other close family relationships, such as:
Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.
Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Richmond DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Richmond
In California, several types of parental combinations can affect child custody decisions and statutes. Parents who are members of a legal marriage or domestic partnership are legally presumed to be a child’s parents under California state law. California recognizes both paternity (fatherhood) and parentage (not necessarily gender-based).
California courts accept legal, certified paternity tests using DNA evidence. The Contra Costa County Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) can provide DNA testing services if a child is receiving services through the Department. The Contra Costa County DCSS office is located at 1025 Escobar Street in Martinez.
Local DNA Stories
Retired Contra Costa County homicide detective Roxane Gruenheid played an important role in uncovering the paternity of a “living Jane Doe.” During a 2003 Richmond murder case, Gruenheid remembered another case from fifteen years earlier involving the accused killer. A girl named “Lisa” had been taken from the man’s custody and adopted by a family in Southern California, but her biological parents remained unknown. Gruenheid ordered a paternity test, but it showed the accused murderer, who later turned out to be a notorious bi-coastal serial killer, was not “Lisa’s” father.
Additional DNA testing revealed that “Lisa’s” birth name was Dawn Beaudin, and her mother was Denise Beaudin, an earlier victim of the killer. The process eventually reunited Dawn, aka “Lisa,” with her biological grandfather, Armand Beaudin.
Experts Say…
In Contra Costa County, residents can receive help with family law cases through the Family Law Facilitator’s Office. The office provides live chat through computers, tablets, and smart phones. Family Law facilitators can help people to file papers for child support modifications, payment arrears, and assist in releasing licenses for individuals with DCSS cases. Facilitators can assist, but not go to court with residents. They are “attorneys employed by the Court to help parties that do not have attorneys with some procedural matters,” according to the Contra Costa Family Court.
