Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Phoenix DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Phoenix, Arizona - DNA testing

Establishing paternity in Phoenix, Arizona

If there is a situation where one of the parents challenges paternity, it can be established by a voluntary DNA test or court-ordered DNA test.

In Arizona, either parent can ask for genetic testing at any DCSS location. If a parent does not want to go for the DNA testing, a court can order it. If the results are 95 percent or higher matching, DCSS will send the results to the parents and the court.

There are some cases in Arizona when the state pays for the generic testing in advance, but if the results confirm paternity, the biological father must pay the testing fee back. Once the test proves paternity, the court can establish it without the biological father's agreement.

Paternity can be established voluntarily by the form called Acknowledgment of paternity.

A Woman from Phoenix, AZ, finally reunited with her father

Whitney from Phoenix discovered her biological father's identity thanks to a DNA test. Her mother met him only once back in 1988, and after that, she just wrote in her journal that a man named Chuck from Michigan was cute and really nice.

Years went by, and neither Whitney nor her mum had any idea where Chuck was or what he did. Whitney's curiosity just would not let it be, and she decided to track him down. "All these years, I didn't know who it was, and she didn't know who it was, and this DNA test really opened up a lot of doors," said Whitney.

Whitney also found out that her father shares the same birthday and that she has two sisters. Now, the whole family plans to meet as soon as possible since they do not want to waste more time. Whitney also said that they embraced her with so much love.
