Palm Coast, Florida: Drug abuse trends

Florida has long been struggling with the tragic consequences of drug overdoses, consistently ranking among the top three states in the U.S. with the highest number of such cases. The substances mostly responsible for these deaths are cocaine, marijuana, counterfeit prescriptions, and fentanyl. Many people are often unaware that the drugs they are taking have been spiked with fentanyl, making them far more potent and increasing the risk of overdose.

In 2020 alone, more than 6,150 people in Florida died due to drug overdoses involving fentanyl or its analogs. In 2021, the numbers continue to rise in 2021, with synthetic opioids causing a significant increase in deadly overdoses. Just two milligrams of fentanyl, equivalent to five grains of salt, can be fatal due to its incredible strength.

Police seized 28,000 illegal drugs in major Flagler County drug bust

Thirteen individuals were arrested during a major drug bust in Flagler County. Police said they seized 28,000 illegal narcotics, including a potent opioid called fentanyl. Authorities said this amount of fentanyl could have killed the entire population of the Palm Coast. They also seized methamphetamine, heroin, and cocaine.

There has been a spike in drug overdose deaths. Since 2002, they have almost quadrupled. The most significant spike came between 2019 and 2020, which is why Florida's police are focused on trafficking and drug distribution, trying to keep as many substances off the streets as possible.
