Experts Say...

In July 2023, Butte County Interagency Narcotics Task Force (BINTF) Commander Michael O'Brien spoke about the increasing overdose deaths in Oroville and Butte County, specifically the rise of fentanyl. "You have drug trafficking organizations doing the manufacturing, the street-level dealers," he said. "It's a much more difficult problem to get a handle on than it was with a prescription drug crisis, but I think the pieces are in place to do just that," O'Brien said that Butte County is well-equipped to handle the opioid crisis. He also spoke about another drug, known as Xylazine or "tranq," that's just as dangerous as fentanyl. Xylazine does not respond to naloxone, a life-saving opioid reversal medication. O'Brien added that the BINTF was a High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) designation, which means the unit can receive law enforcement and public health resources to handle the crisis. "There's funding for different pieces of equipment that are valuable for drug agents but what's even more important, it's the collaboration that it brings," said O'Brien.
