Affecting communities throughout Old Saybrook, Middlesex County, and surrounding Connecticut areas, the growing effects of the opioid epidemic have become overwhelming. But even with numbers so alarmingly high, a recently discovered overdose trend has taken medical professionals by surprise.

In 2019, it was reported that 71 overdose death toxicology reports showed the presence of fentanyl mixed with Xylazine, a veterinary-grade tranquilizer. This drug, which is not approved by the FDA, is considered unsafe for human consumption as it can induce harmful side effects including low blood pressure and low heart rate.

This was the first time in Connecticut that Xylazine was discovered when investigating a deadly drug overdose. Law enforcement believe drug dealers are using it as a cutting agent to stretch out the amount of their product while increasing potency.
