Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in New City, NY

In 1982, the Community Awareness Network for a Drug-Free Life and Environment (CANDLE) coalition was established in Rockland County. Their core mission has been to prevent issues of substance abuse and violence among local youth. Through prevention education and resistance strategies, the coalition aims to improve the health and climate of local communities and schools.

For example, the Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse (VAASA) initiative trains and educates high school varsity athletes on drug-free practices. These students then relay their knowledge to local elementary students to act as positive role models. Furthermore, the Teen Intervene initiative is an early intervention program that offers individualized sessions to New City adolescents displaying early stages of substance abuse issues.

Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in New City, NY

Back in May of 2011, Patrick Kilduff, the operator of Wally’s Ice Cream Parlour in New City was arrested on drug sale and possession charges. According to reports, a raid was conducted on the ice cream parlor where law enforcement discovered that Kilduff was using the back of the shop to manufacture crack cocaine. Inside the shop, which is located across the street from a church and school, police also discovered 5 grams of cocaine, 10 oxycodone pills, marijuana, $3,500 in cash, and tools used for crack cocaine production. The Rockland County Health Department immediately shut the business down, and the location has been permanently closed due to an eviction from the landlord.
