On August 9, 2017, a special task force including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Comal County Narcotics Task Force, New Braunfels Police Department, Comal County Gang Offender Narcotics Enforcement Unit, and associated public safety officials executed multiple search warrants under Operation Crystal Lake.
Operation Crystal Lake targeted known methamphetamine traffickers by focusing on mid-level to street-level distributors as well as users located within the New Braunfels and Comal County area. Following a five-month long investigation, the operation resulted in a total of 38 arrest warrants and 24 physical arrests, as well as the collection of over 40 grams of heroin, 11.5 pounds of methamphetamine, roughly one pound of cocaine, eight firearms, and approximately $5,000 in cash. According to officials, Operation Crystal Lake significantly reduced the available access to drugs throughout the community, helping to make New Braunfels a safer place to live and work.

Fortunately for New Braunfels residents suffering from epilepsy, Texas Legislature enacted the Texas Compassionate Use Act in 2015. Under this new law, qualified physicians are now able to treat epilepsy patients with low-THC cannabis products to help reduce the negative effects of seizures. Furthermore, in 2019, Texas legislature passed House Bill 3703 which expanded the program to patients facing health disorders such as terminal cancer, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, and autism.
