In 2009, Councilman Kevin Meara, developed "City of Angels" to help drug addicts seek treatment. The nonprofit organization helps families with interventions, encourages treatment for addicts, and offers support to recovering addicts as they re-enter their daily lives. Support services are also offered to the family members of those with drug addiction. The services are free to anyone struggling with addiction, whether or not they have health insurance.
In addition to its community efforts, Mercer County is also battling the opioid problem. Free naloxone training and kits are available to family members and friends of those at risk of overdosing, and also to professionals around those at risk. The training includes overdose prevention strategies, how to administer naloxone, and rescue breathing. Online training is also available and naloxone kits may be shipped to residents.

In December of 2020, a Mercer County man was charged with possession with the intent to distribute more than 100 grams of heroin. The 26-year-old was arrested on December 1, 2020. Officers discovered he was dealing heroin in Trenton, NJ and surrounding areas. Officers believed he was in possession of large amounts of heroin, so they followed him in his vehicle to an apartment complex where he took out a bag from his trunk and entered the apartment. He came out holding the bag and went back to his vehicle. Officers approached him and he tried to flee while striking a DEA agent. This led to a high-speed chase, and he was arrested in Lawrenceville, NJ.
