The Morris County Prosecutor's Office recently issued a warning about the surge in opioid overdoses. This is being fueled by a combination of the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and a more potent form of fentanyl being circulated throughout the state. In the first two months of 2021 alone, the county experienced 16 fatal and 22 non-fatal overdoses. In 2020, there were 78 total opioid-related overdoses in the county. In 2020, there were also 156 successful Narcan deployments. In the first two months of 2021, this number had already reached 22.
Hope One Program Aims to Combat Opioid Epidemic
A novel outreach program, called Hope One, has celebrated its fourth year. The program, which was founded by Sheriff James Gannon in 2017, aims to bring services to the clients who need them most. Since its launch, the program has connected with 17,675 people and has trained 3,302 people to use the life-saving drug naloxone.
When asked about the inspiration behind the program, Gannon said, "We're not going to arrest our way out of the problem." Instead, the team travels in a van twice a week, engaging and treating those who are suffering from substance addiction.
