Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Lakewood, NJ, and Ocean County

The state of New Jersey now has a program that allows drug addicts to get help with addiction, without the risk of prosecution. Its purpose is to reduce the impact of heroin and opioid abuse in Lakewood, NJ, as well as the rest of the state.

Before an addict can undergo treatment in this program, he or she must go through medical detox first, since no one can begin the program under the influence of drugs.

The program, led by authorities and treatment providers, offers help to addicts in addition to the Narcan program.

Naloxone (trade name, Narcan) is a drug used to reverse or block the effects of opioids and reduces the number of deaths from overdoses. New Jersey's Department of Health facilitates the availability of Narcan and training statewide.

In the state of New Jersey, including Lakewood and Ocean County, physicians can prescribe Narcan to anyone who may be involved in caring for someone that may overdose. Prescribers need to make sure that those receiving Narcan are aware of the signs of an opioid overdose, the importance of calling 9-1-1, and how to care for the overdose victim.
