Lake Charles, LA: Drug abuse trends

Lake Charles falls under Calcasieu Parish County, which has experienced a significant increase in fentanyl use. Fentanyl in the area is frequently mixed with cocaine, heroin, and counterfeit pills. Fentanyl alone is often deadly, and becomes even more fatal when mixed with other drugs. In the first six months of 2021, Calcasieu Parish County already had 57 deaths caused by drug overdoses. By the end of 2021, officials in the county expected the number of deaths that they recorded at six months to have doubled. In 2021, drug overdoses in Calcasieu Parish County were also expected to double those of 2020.

Despite this alarming trend, law enforcement and emergency medical services in the county have saved hundreds of lives by administering Narcan and Naloxone. The availability of these life-saving drugs has helped to prevent even more fatalities by reversing the deadly effects of opioid overdoses.
