For years, Florida has been one of the top three states in the USA for the highest number of overdose deaths. The prevalence of fentanyl-involved overdoses has been particularly troubling. In 2020, Florida tragically witnessed over 6,150 individuals losing their lives to fentanyl-related overdoses, and the numbers continued to rise in 2021.
To combat the devastating impact of overdose deaths, Osceola County has taken proactive measures to administer Naloxone and save those who unintentionally overdose. Their efforts have proven successful, as they managed to distribute over a thousand Naloxone treatments in 2022, saving many lives.
The Florida Department of Health announced the increased availability of free Naloxone Nasal Spray kits for anyone in need in Osceola County. These kits, containing Narcan, are designed to assist individuals at risk of opioid overdose. The kits can be administered without the presence of a healthcare professional, ensuring easier accessibility when emergencies arise.
