Locally, he was known for supporting the community, helping to find jobs for the unemployed, paying rent for the poor, and allowing novice rappers to use his recording studio for free. But he also had a darker side.
While attending Andrew Jackson High, Mizell joined the Hollis Crew, a local gang that was involved in robberies, burglaries, and drug trafficking. Throughout his rise to fame and subsequent return to Hollis, Mizell retained both his gang contacts and criminal way of life until he was gunned down in his Hollis studio in 2002. In September of 2022, a full 20 years after his murder, two Queens men will stand trial for the killing, which is believed to have been payback after a failed cocaine deal.
