Notable News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Harlingen, TX

In early October 2023, the Cameron County district attorney announced a fatal surge of fentanyl overdoses that occurred over the course of 48 hours. The surge resulted in the deaths of three Harlingen area residents as well as the hospitalization of five others. Investigators believe these overdoses were caused by a circulating batch of cocaine and other illegal substances which were heavily laced with fentanyl.

With the looming concern of additional overdoses, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) was called in to form a task force dedicated to investigating the recent surge. Shortly after the investigation began, law enforcement arrested a 45-year-old Harlingen man after he sold an unknown substance to a local couple who also suffered an overdose. The Cameron County District Attorney believes that the Harlingen man is linked to the string of fentanyl overdoses, and he was held in custody for further investigation.

The drug prevention curriculum must offer a minimum of 10-hour instruction and will also highlight the various signs and symptoms of mental health issues often connected with substance abuse.
