Greenwich Drug Statistics
Connecticut Drug Overdose Statistics
According to a recent report from the Connecticut Department of Public Health, opioid overdoses are on the rise. In 2019, there were 1,200 unintentional drug overdose deaths in Connecticut. This was an 18% increase over the 2018 statistics. By the middle of 2020, there were already 666 confirmed cases and another 336 cases pending toxicology reports. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated this, creating what many referred to as “twin epidemics.”
Many recent overdoses have been attributed to dangerous combinations of synthetic opioids, like fentanyl, and xylazine (an animal tranquilizer). As of June 2020, 86.6% of drug overdose deaths were attributed, at least in part, to fentanyl use. This is an increase from 82% in 2019.
