Greenwich, Connecticut: Drug abuse trends

Greenwich, a town in Fairfield County, CT, is grappling with concerning drug abuse trends. High rates of binge drinking and marijuana are common in Fairfield County. The county has a death rate of 27 per 100,000 individuals, driven by suicides and drug-related incidents. The presence of fentanyl, an extremely potent opioid, and xylazine, an animal tranquilizer, has significantly fueled the rise in drug overdoses. Even small amounts of fentanyl can be fatal. Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, is not effective against xylazine.

Police arrested two men and seized five pounds of fentanyl in Greenwich

Two individuals from Springfield, Massachusetts, were arrested in Greenwich, Connecticut, after police seized nearly 5 pounds of fentanyl. The suspects, aged 29 and 31, were charged with the sale of fentanyl. They were scheduled to go to court in January 2023. The arrests were made based on information received by the Greenwich Police Department Narcotics Section, indicating that the suspects were traveling to Greenwich to sell a significant quantity of fentanyl.

Surveillance was conducted, leading to the location and apprehension of the suspects' vehicle. Upon search, the police discovered 4.7 pounds of fentanyl, packaged in two separate blocks. A preliminary test confirmed the presence of fentanyl.

The Greenwich Police Department and the Department of Human Services are working to identify high-risk individuals and work on educating them. They are implementing strategies that include public education, treatment services, and targeted enforcement. Their goal is to work with other law enforcement agencies to reduce overdoses and disrupt the supply of opioids.
