In 2021, an undercover methamphetamine purchase led to the discovery of a meth lab at a local residence and the arrest of three Ellenwood men. The three men face charges that include the conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

In 2019, police busted a marijuana grow house in Ellenwood that was linked to a major drug ring. Inside, officers found over 100 marijuana plants and $1.3 million worth of processed marijuana. From another grow house earlier the same week, Ellenwood police seized $35 million worth of marijuana and drugs and arrested 16 people.

In 2009, an Ellenwood man was one of 43 drug leaders indicted in a federal crackdown on narcotics sales. The Henry County SWAT Team and U.S. Marshals executed a search warrant for the man’s Ellenwood home, along with six properties in Chicago, where he was working with other drug dealers. Ten Mexican drug cartel leaders were also included in the 43 indicted. Between 1990 and 2008, these men imported about 200 metric tons of cocaine and large amounts of heroin into the United States.
