Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone’s DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.

Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. “Peace of Mind” At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Decatur DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Decatur, GA – DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

In March 2021, an Atlanta bar owner was able to connect with a daughter he never knew, thanks to DNA testing. “I haven’t really come out with it, but my life hugely changed in March of 2021, right in the middle of the pandemic,” said 66-year-old Grant Henry. One day in Decatur, Dr. Merci Ortenzi Treaster was in her home when she received a message regarding a DNA test she had taken six years earlier to learn about her heritage. The message was from Mary Grace, Grant Henry’s daughter. The DNA test showed that the two women were half-sisters. Treaster, who was 32 at the time, was born to a single mother who became pregnant by artificial insemination. Mary Grace’s father was Treaster’s sperm donor. The two half-sisters and their father met for the first time, thanks to their DNA tests. “I realized I never was missing a family,” Treaster said. “I already have a brother, and I already have two parents. So, I may never need a dad or a sister, but here are these really cool people who are now a part of my life.”

Experts Say…

Decatur law firm, Hopkins Law, LLC, explains why it’s important for parents to establish paternity. “In Georgia, when a child is born outside of marriage, the mother has full and complete legal rights to and responsibilities for the child. However, without legal process, the mother has no legal way to enforce any specific amount of child support,” says the law firm. “Without legal process, the father has no legal rights to the child at all, including visitation.” The law firm explains that although the father has no child support obligations, he must still legally support the child. Failing to financially support the child is child abandonment and could lead to criminal prosecution.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Decatur, GA

Unmarried Decatur parents must legally establish paternity for the child to have a legal father. Parents can establish paternity voluntarily by signing a Paternity Acknowledgement form. If the parents cannot agree to establish paternity voluntarily, they’ll go to court. When paternity is questioned, DNA testing is used to determine the child’s biological father. Once paternity is established, the man is identified as the father, and he becomes legally obligated to support the child. However, if a Decatur man seeks parental rights, he must also file for legitimation.
