Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Columbia, SC
In March of 2021, state prosecutors charged 100 individuals following an investigation into a drug organization in Columbia, SC. Ten of the 100 people charged were inmates who used cell phones to run drug rings from inside the state prison. These individuals faced nearly 500 indictments that include kidnapping, drug charges, burglary, and other charges. The drug ring brought in over 2,200 pounds of methamphetamine to South Carolina.
In June of 2021, John Sears, the owner of multiple businesses in the Five Points area in Columbia, was arrested on drug possession charges. Geoffrey Sears was also arrested with charges for manufacturing marijuana, following a seizure on Canal Place Drive in Columbia. John Sears faced charges of possession with the intent to distribute and possession with the intent to distribute in close proximity to a school.
Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Columbia, SC
The Partners for Prevention Coalition of Richland County aims to prevent substance abuse in Columbia and Richland County. The coalition also offers naloxone training free of charge for residents wanting to learn how to spot an opioid overdose and administer the life-saving drug.
