Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Brick, NJ
In 2021, the Brick Police Department began an education program with the hope of preventing overdoses in the community. The program began after officers started interviewing overdose survivors in 2019 after noticing that most of the overdose victims rarely ever received education about drugs. Younger residents only remembered having a DARE class in 5th grade, and residents in their 40s and 50s never had formal drug education. "Not Even Once" is a program where former drug addicts talk directly to students. Patrolman Sean Flynn, who teaches the course, said that the program has led students to admit they have a drug problem and that about one student from every class says they need help. After a DARE class in 5th grade, students also receive education on binge drinking once they reach their freshman year of high school. The course also covers vaping and CBD use.
