Bend, Oregon: Drug abuse trends

Unintentional overdoses in Oregon have grown from 42 deaths a month in 2019 to 80 deaths a month in 2021. The increasing presence of fentanyl and methamphetamine in the state could be mainly to blame. In 2021, over six hundred people died in Oregon due to drug overdoses, most of which were caused by opioids and stimulants. Some of the most commonly abused substances in Oregon include methamphetamine, amphetamine, MDMA, and cocaine. Methamphetamine was involved in 49 percent of all overdose fatalities, heroin was involved in 34 percent, and fentanyl in 29 percent of overdose deaths.

A lieutenant from Bend, Oregon, reported that they had seen a significant peak in fentanyl and heroin, especially in the last two years. In the past, the lieutenant stated that methamphetamine was the most common, but heroin and fentanyl use have been on the rise. The drugs are commonly used together, often by people who are unaware of the presence of fentanyl, and lead to many accidental overdoses each year.

Bend man arrested due to cocaine trafficking

A 35-year-old man was arrested after a traffic stop in Bend. A man was distributing and trafficking cocaine from California to Oregon. Police had a search warrant for his truck, where they found and seized a commercial quantity of cocaine. A commercial quantity is ten or more grams of a mixture or substance containing cocaine. The man was booked into jail and charged with possession of cocaine and the attempt to deliver the controlled substance.
