About Our 9 Panel Drug Test
What Is a 9 Panel Drug Test?
Our 9 panel drug test is a urine drug screen that checks for nine different drug classes in one test. It covers the five drug classes in a standard 5 panel test (marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates and PCP) and adds four that include prescription medicines: benzodiazepines, barbiturates, methadone, and propoxyphene.
Instant 9 Panel vs. Lab-Based 9 Panel
Both versions screen for the same nine drug classes. The main differences are speed and where the sample is tested.
-
Instant 9 Panel Urine: The sample is screened at the clinic, and negative results are usually available the same day. Non-negative results are sent to a lab for confirmation.
-
Lab-Based 9 Panel Urine: The sample is sent to a certified lab. Negative results usually come back in 1–2 business days.
Some employer policies and court programs require lab-based testing with a chain of custody. The lab-based 9 panel is also available at more clinics, so it's a good option if you don't see a nearby clinic that offers the instant test.
What Does a 9 Panel Drug Screen Test For?
A 9 panel drug screen tests for amphetamines and methamphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, marijuana (THC), methadone, opiates (codeine, morphine and heroin), PCP and propoxyphene. A standard 9 panel doesn't test for alcohol. However, alcohol screening can be added if needed.
What Drug Cannot Be Detected in a Urine 9 Panel?
A 9 panel urine drug test only screens for its nine drug classes. Anything outside those classes, including alcohol and many prescription opioids, won't show up.
9 Panel Add-Ons: Alcohol Testing
If an employer needs to include alcohol testing along with the 9 panel drug test, we make it easy to do so. Simply choose the 9 Panel + Urine Alcohol option to add an alcohol test to the same order.
Who Needs a 9 Panel Drug Test?
Employers and individuals both order the 9 panel drug test. It's common in healthcare and other workplaces that want to screen for prescription drug misuse as well as street drugs. You don't need an employer account to order. Anyone can register and pay online or by phone.
Is the 9 Panel Drug Test DOT-Approved?
No. The 9 panel is a non-DOT drug test. It's meant for employers and individuals who aren't covered by federal Department of Transportation testing rules.
If you're ordering a test to meet federal DOT drug testing requirements, you'll need a DOT-compliant drug test instead. See our DOT Drug Test for details.
How Far Does a 9 Panel Urine Drug Test Go Back?
Detection Windows for a 9 Panel Urine Drug Test
A 9 panel urine drug test detects drug use up to about one week back. The test looks for drugs and the metabolites that the body breaks them down into. A result is positive only when the amount found is at or above the lab's set cutoff level. Lower amounts are reported as negative.
Need to look further back? A 9 panel hair follicle drug test can detect drug use from 5 to 90 days back.
What Affects How Long Drugs Show Up on a 9 Panel?
How long a drug shows up on a 9 panel depends on several factors. Detection times can be shorter or longer depending on:
-
How much of the drug was used
-
How often it was used
-
The specific substance
-
The person's metabolism
Some drugs naturally have longer detection windows than other drugs. For example, marijuana has a longer detection window, while substances like cocaine may become undetectable within a few days.
How the 9 Panel Drug Test Works
How Do I Schedule a 9 Panel Drug Test?
- Register online or call (888) 378-2499.
- Get your authorization barcode, which is emailed and texted right after you register.
- Visit your chosen clinic. No appointment is needed.
- Provide a urine sample at the clinic.

- View your results in Health Street's secure online portal.
Do I Need an Appointment for a 9 Panel Drug Test?
No. All testing is walk-in. Register and prepay online or by phone. The authorization barcode is then sent by text and email, and you or your employee can walk in any time the clinic is open. Many clinics can test the same day you register.
Hours vary by clinic. You'll find each clinic's hours in the location finder when you register.
Where to Get a 9 Panel Drug Test
Health Street offers 9 panel drug testing at clinics across all 50 states. Enter a ZIP code in the location finder map above to find the closest clinics to you.
Not every clinic offers every version of the test. Rapid (instant) tests and add-ons like alcohol testing are available at fewer locations. If you don't see a clinic nearby, try the lab-based 9 panel. Still have a question about a clinic? Call us. We are happy to help you.
What to Bring to the Clinic
Bring two things:
-
Your authorization barcode, shown on a phone or printed
-
A valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport
Lost the barcode? Call us and we'll resend it.
What If the Person Being Tested Doesn't Show Up?
An unused test isn't wasted. It stays on your account as a credit, and you can apply it to another employee. Just give us a call to apply the credit to another employee.
How Long Does a 9 Panel Drug Test Take to Come Back?
Negative 9 panel results usually come back within 1-2 business days. With the Instant 9 Panel Urine, negative results are normally available the same day. Results that need more review take longer. Here's what to expect at each stage.
9 Panel Drug Test Results Timeline
Negative (Instant 9 Panel)
Same day
Negative (lab-based 9 Panel)
About 1–2 business days
Non-negative (confirmation testing)
About 3–5 days
What Happens After Your Sample Is Collected
- Screening: your urine sample is screened for all nine drug classes.
- Negative results are released: if nothing is detected, the result is posted to your secure online portal, usually within 1-2 business days. The Instant 9 Panel usually posts negative results the same day.
- Confirmation testing: if the results are non-negative, the lab runs a confirmation test on the same sample. This step helps rule out false positives, and it takes about 3–5 days.
- Medical Review Officer review: confirmed results are reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO).
Results Reviewed by a Medical Review Officer
Every lab-based 9 panel through Health Street goes through a structured review before a result is final.
- The specimen is screened at a certified drug testing lab for all nine drug classes.
- Any non-negative screen is confirmed with GC/MS or LC-MS/MS testing.
- Our Medical Review Officer (MRO) reviews the confirmed result and may contact the donor about medications or other medical explanations.
An MRO is a licensed physician who serves as an impartial party between the lab and the employer. If an employee has a valid prescription for a medication that caused the non-negative result, then the MRO can revise the result before it's reported. MRO review is usually completed within 24-72 hours after the lab shows a non-negative result.
Who Receives the 9 Panel Drug Test Results?
Results go to whoever placed and paid for the order. Employers receive an email when results are ready and can view them in Health Street's secure online portal. Individuals who order their own test receive results the same way.
Need results sent to someone else, such as a court or treatment program? Call us. With a signed release of information, we can send results to an approved third party.
9 Panel Drug Test Cost and Payment
How Much Does a 9 Panel Drug Test Cost?
A 9 panel urine drug test through Health Street starts at $89. The price covers everything, including the collection, lab testing and MRO review. You pay Health Street when you register, and the clinic won't charge you anything extra.
Do You Accept Insurance or a Doctor's Prescription?

Frequently Asked Questions
Below are the most commonly asked questions about this product in our call center.
Does a 9 panel drug test test for alcohol?
No. A standard 9 panel drug test does not test for alcohol. To check for alcohol too, choose the 9 Panel + Urine Alcohol option ($129), which adds a urine alcohol test to the same visit.
Is there a 9 panel saliva drug test?
Health Street offers saliva drug testing, but our standard 9 panel drug test uses a urine sample. We have saliva drug tests available in 7, 11, and 17 panels. We also have a wide variety of urine drug tests and hair drug tests that can identify virtually any substance. If you are having trouble finding a drug test that meets your needs, please don't hesitate to give us a call so that we can match you with the test that you need.
What is the difference between a 9 panel urine drug test and a hair test?
The biggest difference between a 9 panel urine test and a hair test is the amount of time that each panel can identify drug use. The urine test identifies more recent use, including up to approximately one week back, whereas the hair drug test can detect drug use between 5 and 90 days back.
Do I need to pay beforehand and make an appointment for drug testing?
To proceed with testing, registration and payment are required in advance. However, appointments are not necessary for drug testing. Upon successful registration, an authorization barcode will be instantly emailed to you and texted to the devices indicated during the registration process. The barcode will be accompanied by a map of the clinic location. You can then visit the drug testing facility at your convenience during our operating hours.
What information must I provide to schedule a 9 panel drug test?
To schedule a 9 Panel Drug Test, we will ask you for the following information during the registration process: company name or individual's name, ZIP Code, email and phone number.
What Drugs Does the 9 Panel Drug Test Cover?
Please keep in mind that although this is the 9 Panel Drug Test, more types of substances can be detected in this panel. This is because many of these drugs belong to the same class (e.g., codeine, morphine, and heroin are all basic opiates).
