Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Williamsburg DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Williamsburg, VA - DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

In Williamsburg in 2020, a local man received a DNA test as a birthday gift so he could learn more about his father's side of the family. The man, Greg Carter, wasn't looking for anything specific but wanted to see what he could learn about his father's family. After taking the DNA test, he noticed an unfamiliar person that matched as a close relative. Carmela Jacobs, who lived many states away, also took a DNA test and discovered the same. She contacted Greg, stating they were related. Another DNA test determined that it was 99.2% likely the two are half-siblings. They met up in Williamsburg for the first time and began piecing things together. "I still am just smiling ear to ear," Carmela said. "We know that this is just the beginning."

Establishing Paternity in Williamsburg, VA

Establishing paternity is the process of a man becoming a child's legal father. In Williamsburg, if the parents are married, the law considers the husband the child's legal father, and the parents do not need to take further steps to establish paternity. However, unmarried couples must establish paternity, whether voluntarily or involuntarily. If the parents agree on the child's father, they can sign an Acknowledgment of Paternity (AOP), a legal form stating the child's father. Parents can sign the form at the hospital when the child is born or later at the Vital Records Office or the James City County-Williamsburg Health Department, located at 5300 Palmer Lane in Williamsburg. If the parents cannot agree to establish paternity with an AOP, they can go to court. Once paternity is established, the father can have his name added to the birth certificate, and a judge can issue visitation, custody, and child support orders.

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Williamsburg, VA

If either parent is unsure of the child's father, they can use DNA testing to prove paternity. DNA test samples are taken by swabbing the inside of the child's and father's cheeks and analyzed in a certified lab. DNA tests can exclude a man as the father or determine fatherhood with 99% accuracy.
