Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Norfolk DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Norfolk, Virginia - DNA testing

Establishing paternity in Norfolk, Virginia

Establishing paternity is necessary if the couple with a child is not married and wants the child to have a legal father. In Virginia, parents can establish paternity by signing an Acknowledgment of Paternity, open a child support case, or file a petition at the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.

Signing an AOP is one of the easiest ways of establishing paternity, and parents can do it in the hospital when the child is born. The other two ways may require DNA testing to prove who the biological father is, and then paternity can be established.

Establishing paternity gives the father rights towards his child, such as seeking custody, and visitation, but it also makes him responsible for financial support. Having a father's name on a birth certificate means multiple benefits for the child, such as knowing their wholeidentity or health insurance.

Three generations of the family connected thanks to a DNA test

A man from Virginia took a DNA test, and found his biological father. It seems like history repeated herself because soon after, his biological daughter found him!

When Hobbs was just fifteen, he found out the man raising him was not his biological father. He spent thirty years looking for his birth dad; he even hired detectives to find him. Eventually, he got a hint and reconnected with his dad two and a half years ago.

But just recently, something else happened! A girl, Elizabeth, also wanted to know where she came from, so she took a DNA test. Once it matched her with her father, she contacted him on social media. And along the way, she found a brother as well.

Eventually, Elizabeth and Hobbs planned a meeting and spent the whole weekend together. The reunion was amazing, and they loved spending time together, so they had already planned another meeting.
