Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Newport News DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

DNA Test Helps Vietnamese-Born Man from Newport News Meet His GI Father

Andrew Nguyen was born in Vietnam in 1972 to Tram 'Kim' Nguyen and Michael Strange, an American GI who was stationed on his second tour of duty. When Andrew was 16, he and his mother were sponsored by U.S. Catholic Church in Newport News, Virginia, allowing them to move to the United States. Andrew graduated from high school and college, married, and became a police officer. His father, Michael, searched for him briefly but without sufficient information, quickly hit a roadblock.

Years later, Andrew's son Matthew gave him a DNA test for his birthday. When the results started coming in, he helped him connect the dots, eventually leading to a reunion between Andrew and Michael. After meeting, the two continued to talk nearly every day, sometimes multiple times a day. They've now met in person and say they'll never let distance come between them again.

The Virginia Paternity Establishment Program

According to the Virginia Paternity Establishment Program, there are many important reasons to take the time to establish a child's paternity. Not only can having a relationship with both parents help support a child's self-esteem, but it also gives a child access to both sides of their family's health history. Legal paternity also establishes important rights, such as the ability to receive an inheritance and access to the father's Social Security and Veteran's Benefits.

How to Disestablish Paternity in Newport News

While establishing legal paternity is important for a child and both of the child's parents, it's also important for men to be able to protect themselves against false paternity claims. According to attorneys at The Firm for Men, a family law group serving Newport News and the surrounding area, if a man faces a false paternity claim, he must legally prove that he is not the child's father. The most common way to do this is through a DNA paternity test, which is done by swabbing the man's inner cheek. The results must show that there is an accuracy of 98% or higher for the courts to use the test to establish or disestablish paternity.
