Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Turlock DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Turlock, CA - DNA Testing

Local DNA Stories

In February 2023 in Turlock, CA, two sisters met for the first time in 78 years, thanks to DNA testing. Hanford resident Esther Vargas and her four siblings were abandoned by their mother when Vargas was only two months old. Her mother left her children in an apartment in Oakland with only $5. The five children went to five different adoptive homes, and Vargas' adoptive family moved from the area to Hanford. She started her own family, and her children had questions about their history. One of them said, "We had no kind of background to see if (anyone) had any medical conditions because we didn't know our family history." Her grandchild bought her a DNA test, but Vargas was hesitant to take it. After about a year, she gave in and took the test, and it wasn't long until it showed a match. She learned that her brother was looking for her. Her family planned a surprise family reunion in Turlock, and her sister came to meet them. While praising DNA testing, Vargas said, "They let you know if you have lost family. You find them without too much of a hassle!"

Experts Say...

Scott Mitchell, an attorney that serves Turlock, CA, explains paternity actions in California. "When two people have a child together when they aren't married, one of the parents must file a paternity action with the court in order to establish who the legal father is," he says. "A paternity action is similar to a family law divorce case, to the extent that child custody and child support issues are handled in very much the same way."

Proving Paternity for Child Custody Purposes in Turlock, CA

Unmarried parents that have a child in Turlock must establish paternity for the child to have a legal father. If either parent questions paternity, DNA testing can determine the father. Otherwise, if both parents agree about the child's biological father, they can establish paternity by signing a voluntary Declaration of Parentage form. Once the form is signed, the parents give up the right to DNA testing, so it's crucial to be certain about the child's father.
