Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Trinidad DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Trinidad, CO - DNA Testing

Importance of Establishing Parentage in Trinidad, CO

When a Trinidad child is born to two unmarried parents, only the mother will possess custodial rights over the child until parentage is properly established. It's extremely important for both parents to establish parentage in the state of Colorado, as this process legally identifies the biological father, has his name placed on the birth certificate, and grants him parental rights.

Establishing parentage in Colorado also provides a Trinidad child with a multitude of benefits. With two legal parental parties, a child can now collect benefits such as military benefits, social security, and health insurance from either parent. Lastly, once parentage is established, a parent can request monthly child support payments from the non-custodial parent to provide for the child.

Methods of Establish Parentage in Trinidad, CO

Unwed Trinidad parents who wish to establish parentage can do so by signing and submitting an Acknowledgement of Parentage. This form is made available at the hospital following a child's birth or can be completed at a later date through Las Animas County Child Support Services. Because this form is legally binding, it's recommended to seek DNA testing to accurately identify a child's father.

Keep in mind that signing an acknowledgment is completely voluntary, and if either parent refuses to do so, then parentage must be established via court order. Filing a petition to establish parentage in Las Animas County Court will prompt a judge to issue a summons for the opposing parent and request DNA testing. If the biological father is identified, then paternity can be established.

Disestablishing Paternity in Trinidad, CO

Failing to use DNA testing prior to establishing parentage can result in a Trinidad man caring for and financially supporting a child that is biologically not his. If a parent learns of mistaken paternity later down the line, the Colorado Judicial System allows them to file a petition to disclaim paternity in an effort to remove child support obligations. This process will likely require the use of DNA testing results to demonstrate that the previously presumed father is not the biological one.
