Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Ridgewood Queens DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Queens Woman Learns About Family and Heritage through DNA Testing

Queens resident Christine Jacobsen thought she knew who her parents were, until she took a DNA test in 2016. Jacobsen was interested in learning more about her background and heritage. When she got the results from the test, however, she was stunned. Both of her parents were white and of European heritage, or so she'd been told. The DNA test, however, showed her to have over 20% West African ancestry.

While Jacobsen had believed the man who raised her was her father her whole life, the DNA results did not come as a complete surprise. After drinking heavily one night, her mother had once told her that she could possibly be the child of another man, but her father had said the claim was preposterous. By the time Jacobsen received the DNA test results, her mother had already passed away and thus could not provide further information. But the comment she had made, and the surprising but tantalizing 20% indicator, led her to dig deeper.

Lo and behold, Jacobsen eventually found and connected with a few of her relatives through a DNA database and finally identified her biological father, who was already deceased. She has since gone to visit her remaining family in the Bahamas, where he was from, and has become close with many of her newly found family members.
