Like many cities across the United States, North Liberty and the rest of Johnson County have struggled with opioid use. Statistics show that drug-related deaths here have been consistently rising since 2018. Between 2018 and 2022, deadly overdoses in Johnson County increased from 13 to 48. At the same time, the number of times the overdose-reversing drug Narcan was disbursed by first responders in Johnson County increased from 29 times in 2019 to a high of 47 times in 2020 before falling to 34 in 2021 and 37 (preliminarily) in 2022.

Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in North Liberty

North Liberty residents who suffer from drug problems and have a brush with the law may be able to take advantage of Johnson County’s Jail Alternative Program. This program is designed to provide treatment options to individuals struggling with mental health and co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders. It provides crisis support and interventions, connections with community-based services and agencies, and intensive, short-term case monitoring. The overall purpose of this voluntary program is to reduce the number of individuals with mental illness and co-occurring disorders held in Johnson County jails.

Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Iowa

Between November 2021 and November 2022, the state of Iowa saw 498 drug overdose deaths, with 223 of the deaths involving a synthetic opioid. As fentanyl has become more prevalent in the state, overdose deaths here have continued to increase. In 2023, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill that will increase penalties for fentanyl-related crimes.

In March of 2023, Johnson County officials were presented with the opportunity to participate in a pending litigation settlement against drug makers and pharmacies, potentially worth $2.5 million. If the county opts in, any funds received would be required to be used for opioid remediation programs throughout the county, potentially including the North Liberty area.
